#GOPfail: Palazzo’s Anti-LGBT Bigotry on Grammys’ Gay Marriages Doesn’t Win Fans in Mississippi

Palazzo-anti-LGBT-does-not-represent-Mississippi-Vote-Trish-Causey-for-CongressIf Palazzo thought he would win brownie points by defaming gay marriage and members of the LGBT community, his bigotry backfired — big time.

On Monday, Palazzo posted a picture of one of the couples that got married at the Grammys (from a Fox News page, no less) and made a discriminatory comment about “gay Hollywood”.  Even worse, he thought he could drag all of Mississippi into his ignorant hatred, but the people of the 4th District spoke out.  They spoke out so much that many of their comments opposing Palazzo’s anti-LGBT stance were deleted.

I was so immensely proud of my fellow Mississippians for speaking (and shouting) out at such medieval ignorance that pervades Mississippi politics here in the 21st century.  This cacophony for equality was picked up by several online websites, who seemed shocked to learn that not everyone in Mississippi is molded in the fashion of Haley Barbour or Palazzo himself.  Quelle surprise

Note to rest of the United States:  Mississippi does not live in the 1860’s or the 1960’s — our politicians want you to think that so you leave Mississippi alone.  Good ol’ boy politics works better when no one outside is paying attention.

Growing up in the theatre and ballet worlds, I’ve known gay people all my life and have NEVER encountered the hostility and hatred that Republican politicians spew on a daily basis, usually in the name of being “Christian”.  These pretend Christians need to re-read Jesus’ words and apply it in their lives: love (equality), compassion (isn’t socialism), healing the sick (Obamacare is working), and helping the poor (the 99%).  Real Christians who actually live by Jesus’ teachings need to keep speaking up over the fake Christians and puppet politicians.

The fact that Palazzo did this on his official Facebook page as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives makes his words and bigotry even more egregious.

Not to worry, though, Mississippi’s 4th District.  Change is coming in 2014.  We will make sure of it!
